OCEANA Campaigns

Ghana is the third largest fishing nation in West Africa – one of the most productive ocean ecosystems on the planet. But depleted fisheries and ecosystems, driven by overfishing, illegal fishing, and insufficient enforcement are threatening the millions of Ghanaians who depend on the oceans for food, nutrition, and livelihoods.

In 2026, Oceana will launch campaigns to help rebuild the country’s ocean abundance while also ensuring that this abundance benefits those who need it most. Our campaigns will be crafted and executed in allyship with fish-reliant communities in Ghana to help restore fisheries, boost nutrition and local access to fish, and safeguard coastal livelihoods.

Since 2001, Oceana has won over 325 victories for the oceans and protected more than 4 million square miles of ocean habitat. Our science-based campaigns have specific goals and deadlines — enabling us to create real, measurable change for the oceans. From stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas to protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, Oceana has been a leader in protecting and restoring marine biodiversity and abundance.
